Always tired, never truly rested: what your body is trying to tell you

You sleep seven, maybe eight hours. Your schedule doesn't even look that full. And yet you wake up feeling like you've just run a marathon. The day hasn't started and you're already tired.

If this sounds familiar: you're not alone. Chronic fatigue is one of the most common complaints I see in my acupuncture practice. And the surprising thing is that it rarely has much to do with sleep.

The paradox of always tired but always busy

We live in a culture that prizes productivity above almost everything else. Being busy has become a status symbol. And in that busyness, we forget something very basic: our bodies were never designed to be constantly switched on.

Many people who are always tired are also constantly active. They work, exercise, scroll, plan and when they finally sit down, they can't really relax. Too tired to sleep, too wired to wind down: that's a nervous system that's stuck.

Why you wake up exhausted even after a full night's sleep

Chronic fatigue is rarely about too few hours of sleep. More often, it's a sign that your body isn't truly recovering even when you rest.
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), this is understood as Qi deficiency: a depletion of the vital energy that flows through your body. This isn't mystical or vague, it's simply your body's capacity to function, recover and renew itself.

Qi becomes depleted by:

  • Prolonged stress that overloads your adrenal glands and nervous system

  • Irregular eating habits that tax your digestive system

  • Too little real rest: scrolling doesn't count, and sleeping with an overactive mind doesn't either

  • Suppressed emotions that quietly drain your energy without you noticing

From a western perspective, we see this reflected in disrupted cortisol patterns and a nervous system locked in 'on' mode.

Signs you should take seriously

Feeling tired after a demanding week is normal. But these patterns deserve more attention — especially if they've been going on for a while:

  • You wake up tired, even after a full night's sleep

  • Your energy never really peaks: there are only degrees of tiredness

  • Small things feel overwhelming in a way they didn't used to

  • You struggle to concentrate or think clearly

  • You've become more sensitive to noise, stimulation or emotions

  • Your body feels heavy, like you're moving through treacle

What can help with chronic fatigue

There's no quick fix for deep exhaustion. But there are things that make a real, lasting difference.

  • Rest as a priority, not a reward. Rest isn't something you earn after being productive,it's a biological necessity. Schedule it like an appointment.

  • Eat warm and regularly. In TCM, the spleen (your digestive system) is the engine of your energy. Warm, cooked meals at regular times support your energy production in a way that cold smoothies simply don't.

  • Sleep before midnight. It's not just the hours that count but also the timing. Between 11pm and 1am is, in TCM, the hour of Liver and Gallbladder recovery. Going to bed consistently late adds up, even if you sleep long enough.

  • Move, but not always intensely. Gentle movement like walking or yoga helps energy flow without depleting it further. Intense exercise when you're already running on empty can sometimes make things worse.

How acupuncture helps with fatigue

Acupuncture works directly on the nervous system. It activates the parasympathetic response (the body's 'rest and recover' mode) and helps shift the body out of chronic stress activation. Research shows that acupuncture can lower cortisol levels and improve sleep quality, even in people who have been dealing with low energy for years.

In my Amsterdam practice, I regularly see people who have been always tired for so long that they've started to accept it as normal. After a course of treatment, they say things like: "I'd forgotten what it felt like to wake up actually rested."

That's what becomes possible when your body gets what it needs.

Finally

If you're always tired and feel like you can never quite recharge: this is a gentle nudge to take it seriously. You don't have to figure it out alone. And you definitely don't have to get used to it.
